BHIA holds neighborhood civic meetings periodically throughout the year to share information about matters relevant to the community, provide updates on issues within the Association’s mission, and offer residents opportunities for civic discussion and participation.

BHIA Meetings
BHIA meetings are designed to be informative, conversational, and responsive to matters of current interest to the community. Rather than following a formally circulated public agenda, BHIA identifies topics and invited participants based on issues relevant to the neighborhood at the time.
The primary focus of BHIA meetings is to inform and engage residents and to provide a forum where neighbors can raise concerns, share perspectives, and discuss issues affecting our community. These conversations help BHIA better understand neighborhood priorities and, where possible, bring residents together to identify constructive solutions and next steps.
Elected officials and their representatives may be invited or recognized to provide brief updates as one portion of a meeting, but these updates are not the primary focus of BHIA’s neighborhood civic meetings.
When BHIA is addressing a particular issue, we may also invite public officials, City representatives, subject-matter experts, or other participants to provide relevant information or respond to community questions.
Meeting Guidelines & FAQs
Q: Does BHIA circulate a meeting agenda in advance?
A: BHIA generally provides members with advance information about the primary topics or focus of an upcoming meeting but does not routinely circulate a detailed public agenda. Meeting topics and format are determined by BHIA based on matters relevant to the Association’s mission and membership.
Q: Do I need to be a BHIA member to attend?
A: BHIA neighborhood meetings are generally open to residents and members of the community. At check-in, we may ask whether attendees are current BHIA members and provide an opportunity to join or renew. Annual household membership is $10 and supports BHIA's volunteer civic work.
Q: How are meeting topics and speakers selected?
A: BHIA identifies meeting topics and invited participants based on matters relevant to the Association's mission and the interests of the community. Residents are welcome to suggest topics or speakers for consideration; however, submission of a suggestion does not guarantee inclusion at a future meeting.
Q: How does BHIA support and engage with the local business community?
A: BHIA recognizes local businesses and entrepreneurs as an important part of the West Roxbury community and values the role they play in contributing to a vibrant, connected neighborhood. We welcome local business owners and entrepreneurs to participate in BHIA meetings, raise issues affecting the community, and become involved in neighborhood initiatives and improvement efforts.
BHIA also helps connect local businesses with the community through our Local Business Directory and Local Business Map and shares information about selected civic and community matters that may affect the local business environment. Where appropriate, BHIA can also help direct businesses to outside resources for business development, permitting, technical assistance, and other needs.
Q: How can I have a question addressed at a BHIA meeting?
A: Members are welcome to share their perspectives, raise neighborhood concerns, and bring issues affecting the community forward for discussion. Members can also email questions or concerns to BHIA in advance of a meeting. To help ensure that everyone has an opportunity to speak, we ask residents who would like to raise a question or concern during the meeting to sign up at the check-in table when they arrive. The meeting chair manages the order and length of discussion so that conversations remain productive and participants have a fair opportunity to contribute.
Q: Can organizations distribute flyers, petitions or other materials?
A: Materials intended for distribution or display at a BHIA meeting must be submitted to BHIA in advance for review and approval. Attendance at a meeting does not constitute permission to distribute materials.
Q: Can political candidates campaign or participate in candidate debates at BHIA meetings?
A: BHIA meetings are not campaign events or candidate forums. Elected officials or their representatives may be invited or recognized to provide information relevant to matters affecting the community. Their participation does not constitute an endorsement by BHIA.
Q: Can outside organizations ask BHIA to announce or distribute information?
A: Organizations are welcome to submit information for BHIA's consideration. BHIA determines what information it shares through its meetings, website, newsletter, calendar, and other communications based on relevance to our mission and community.
