Our work includes advocating for improvements to public spaces, participating in community cleanups, sharing information about matters affecting the neighborhood, and creating opportunities for civic discourse and community feedback.
Tim White’s Way: Five Years Later, Still No Trash Receptacle
When Tim White’s Way was being planned, cleanliness and ongoing maintenance were explicitly identified as important to the success of the new public space. The original concept rendering even depicts waste receptacles as part of the design.

The original planning language was equally clear:
“Cleanliness of the space is a large concern, so we will add waste receptacles and make a clear maintenance plan designating responsibility for upkeep of the space.”
Five years after the 2021 redesign plans were presented, a permanent trash receptacle has not been installed within Tim White’s Way as contemplated in the plans.
While a public trash receptacle is located elsewhere along Centre Street, residents using Tim White’s Way do not have an immediately accessible receptacle within the space. Residents have observed litter accumulating on the ground and within the planted areas.
Community Cleanup — May 2026
BHIA participated in the City of Boston’s Love Your Block program on May 2, selecting Tim White’s Way as our cleanup site and bringing additional equipment to undertake work beyond the general cleanup.

The effort helped care for this important community space while also highlighting a continuing issue: volunteer cleanups cannot substitute for the basic infrastructure and ongoing maintenance needed to keep a heavily used public space clean.
A Simple, Practical Improvement
Volunteer cleanups make an important contribution to caring for Tim White’s Way, but they cannot substitute for the basic infrastructure needed to maintain a heavily used public space.
BHIA is asking the City of Boston to install and regularly service a permanent trash receptacle within Tim White’s Way—an improvement contemplated in the original planning and one that would help prevent litter from accumulating on the ground and within the planted areas.
